Phase 1: Immediate first aid

Use what you have right now. Nothing to buy.

  1. Blot & isolate

Blot hard with a thick wad of paper towels — stand on it if it's carpet — until barely anything transfers. Don't rub. On leather: blot only, using as little liquid as possible.

  2. Pantry pre-treatment

    You need

½ tsp Liquid Dish Soap (e.g. Dawn)+1 cup cold water

    Method

Whisk into a foam and use only the foam, on a soft cloth. Wipe gently, then dry straight away with a clean cloth. Suede: skip this and use a suede brush or clean pencil eraser.

  3. Final flush & wash

Wipe with a barely damp cloth to lift any residue, then let it air-dry naturally — no hairdryer. Condition smooth leather once dry. Suede: brush the nap back up when dry.

Why this one's tricky

Leather sofas and car seats need speed and restraint. Urine is mildly acidic and can stiffen and discolor leather, but soaking it with water to 'rinse' causes tide marks and cracking. Blot hard, then wipe with just the foam from a weak soap solution, and dry immediately. Condition smooth leather once it's dry. On suede or a stain that has dried in, call a leather specialist: home methods often leave a bigger mark than the original.

Phase 2: Deep restoration

If a faint shadow remains after the initial rinse, or for fabrics that cannot tolerate water agitation:

Residual ghost-ring or dry-clean-only fiber?

Normal washing often won't shift the last trace of a set-in stain. Treat it with a targeted spotter before it goes anywhere near dryer heat — heat locks in whatever is left.
