Ballpoint inkon leather & suede
Do NOT use rubbing alcohol on leather โ it strips the dye and leaves a pale patch bigger than the ink.
Phase 1: Immediate first aid
Use what you have right now. Nothing to buy.
Blot & isolate
Don't wet it. Slip a folded paper towel under the stain so the ink has somewhere to go. On leather: blot only, using as little liquid as possible.

Method
Whisk into a foam and use only the foam, on a soft cloth. Wipe gently, then dry straight away with a clean cloth. Suede: skip this and use a suede brush or clean pencil eraser.
Final flush & wash
Wipe with a barely damp cloth to lift any residue, then let it air-dry naturally โ no hairdryer. Condition smooth leather once dry. Suede: brush the nap back up when dry.
Why this one's tricky
Ballpoint ink on a leather sofa, bag or car seat is where the internet's favorite tip (rubbing alcohol or hairspray) goes wrong: alcohol strips leather dye along with the ink and leaves a pale patch bigger than the original mark. Try the gentlest option first, foam from a mild soap solution on a soft cloth. If that doesn't shift it, a dedicated leather ink remover or a leather specialist is safer than anything stronger from the kitchen.
Phase 2: Deep restoration
If a faint shadow remains after the initial rinse, or for fabrics that cannot tolerate water agitation:
Residual ghost-ring or dry-clean-only fiber?
Normal washing often won't shift the last trace of a set-in stain. Treat it with a targeted spotter before it goes anywhere near dryer heat โ heat locks in whatever is left.
AlbaChem Dry Spotter
Solvent-based spotter for grease, oil, wax, makeup and ink. Works without water, so it suits fabrics that canโt be wet-cleaned.
Apply a few drops with a cotton bud, tamp gently, then flush as the label directs. Patch-test first.
- Carbona Stain Devils
Most oxygen stain removers aren't safe on silk, wool or leather โ check the label, or go to a professional.
