Phase 1: Immediate first aid

Use what you have right now. Nothing to buy.

  1. Blot & isolate

Brush off any mud or bits once they're dry. Don't wet the whole area yet.

  2. Pantry pre-treatment

    You need

    1 tbsp Rubbing Alcohol

Rubbing Alcohol: Around 70% strength, from any pharmacy. Not methylated spirits.

    Method

Dab it on with a cotton pad β€” dab, don't rub β€” and move to a clean part of the pad as the color transfers. Patch-test first; it can lift dyes and some wood finishes.

  3. Final flush & wash

Rinse the treatment out from the back with cold water. Wash on the care-label setting, then air-dry and check in daylight before any tumble-drying β€” heat sets whatever is left.

Why this one's tricky

Grass stains (think football kits and jeans knees) are a mix of green chlorophyll pigment and plant protein, which is why they can be stubborn. Rubbing alcohol dabbed onto the green breaks up the pigment; cold water stops the protein setting. Avoid hot washes until the green has gone. Enzyme ('bio') detergents help on cotton, but keep them away from wool and silk, as they digest those fibers.

Phase 2: Deep restoration

If a faint shadow remains after the initial rinse, or for fabrics that cannot tolerate water agitation:

Residual ghost-ring or dry-clean-only fiber?

Normal washing often won't shift the last trace of a set-in stain. Treat it with a targeted spotter before it goes anywhere near dryer heat β€” heat locks in whatever is left.
