Ruston polyester & synthetics
Do NOT use chlorine bleach β it reacts with rust and makes the stain darker and permanent.
Phase 1: Immediate first aid
Use what you have right now. Nothing to buy.
Blot & isolate
Brush off any loose flakes while dry. Keep the area dry until you're ready to treat it.
Pantry pre-treatment
You need
30 ml lemon juice+15 ml table salt
Method
Cover the rust with salt, squeeze the lemon juice over it and leave for an hour (sunlight speeds it up). Rinse well.
Final flush & wash
Rinse with lukewarm water, then wash on a synthetics cycle. Air-dry and check β synthetics hold oily residue that heat will set.
Phase 2: Deep restoration
If a faint shadow remains after the initial rinse, or for fabrics that cannot tolerate water agitation:
Residual ghost-ring or dry-clean-only fiber?
Normal washing often won't shift the last trace of a set-in stain. Treat it with a targeted spotter before it goes anywhere near dryer heat β heat locks in whatever is left.
Professional rust remover
Rust needs a dedicated acid-based remover. Best handled by a dry cleaner, especially on delicates or stone.
Apply a few drops with a cotton bud, tamp gently, then flush as the label directs. Patch-test first.
