Candle waxon carpet & rugs
Do NOT scrub or wipe soft wax β it smears deeper into the weave. Let it harden first.
Phase 1: Immediate first aid
Use what you have right now. Nothing to buy.
Blot & isolate
Let it harden fully β hold a bag of ice on it for 5 minutes. Then flake off as much as you can with a blunt knife or old card. On carpet: work from the edges inward, and never pour liquid on.
Pantry pre-treatment
You need
brown paper bag or paper towels+iron (low, no steam)
Method
Lay paper over the wax and press with the iron for a few seconds. Move to a clean patch of paper and repeat until no more wax transfers. Synthetics and wool: lowest setting only.
Final flush & wash
Rinse by spraying a little cold water and blotting dry β repeat 2β3 times to get the residue out. Weigh a thick towel down with books for an hour, then let it air-dry and brush the pile up.
Why this one's tricky
Candle wax on carpet looks dramatic but is very fixable. Let it go hard, chill it with ice, and break off as much as you can. Then lay brown paper over the rest and press with a warm iron for a few seconds at a time; the paper soaks up the melted wax. Use a low setting on synthetic carpet, which can melt. Coloured candles may leave a dye mark afterwards, which rubbing alcohol usually lifts.
Phase 2: Deep restoration
If a faint shadow remains after the initial rinse, or for fabrics that cannot tolerate water agitation:
Residual ghost-ring or dry-clean-only fiber?
Normal washing often won't shift the last trace of a set-in stain. Treat it with a targeted spotter before it goes anywhere near dryer heat β heat locks in whatever is left.
AlbaChem Dry Spotter
Solvent-based spotter for grease, oil, wax, makeup and ink. Works without water, so it suits fabrics that canβt be wet-cleaned.
Apply a few drops with a cotton bud, tamp gently, then flush as the label directs. Patch-test first.
