Red wineon carpet & rugs
Do NOT use hot water or rub β heat and friction lock the tannin into the fiber for good.
Phase 1: Immediate first aid
Use what you have right now. Nothing to buy.
Blot & isolate
Blot from the outside in with a white cloth or paper towel β press, lift, move to a clean bit. Don't rub. Flush from the back with cold water if the fabric allows. On carpet: work from the edges inward, and never pour liquid on.

Method
Mix together. Sponge onto the stain from the outside in, leave 10 minutes, then blot dry with a fresh cloth. Never mix vinegar with peroxide or bleach.
Final flush & wash
Rinse by spraying a little cold water and blotting dry β repeat 2β3 times to get the residue out. Weigh a thick towel down with books for an hour, then let it air-dry and brush the pile up.
Why this one's tricky
Carpet is the worst place for red wine because the pile acts like a wick: you clean the surface, the backing dries out, and the stain climbs back up overnight. That's why blotting matters more than any product. Keep lifting moisture out until a fresh paper towel comes away almost clean, use as little liquid as you can, and finish with a towel weighed down by books so the last of the color transfers up into the towel rather than back into the carpet.
Phase 2: Deep restoration
If a faint shadow remains after the initial rinse, or for fabrics that cannot tolerate water agitation:
Residual ghost-ring or dry-clean-only fiber?
Normal washing often won't shift the last trace of a set-in stain. Treat it with a targeted spotter before it goes anywhere near dryer heat β heat locks in whatever is left.
