Phase 1: Immediate first aid

Use what you have right now. Nothing to buy.

  1. Blot & isolate

Blot hard with a thick wad of paper towels β€” stand on it if it's carpet β€” until barely anything transfers. Don't rub. On carpet: work from the edges inward, and never pour liquid on.

  2. Pantry pre-treatment

    You need

1 part white vinegar+1 part cold water+Baking Soda

Baking Soda: Not baking powder β€” that has added acid and starch.

    Method

Mix, then spray or sponge on until the spot is just damp through. Blot hard. Once nearly dry, sprinkle baking soda over and vacuum it up a few hours later.

  3. Final flush & wash

Rinse by spraying a little cold water and blotting dry β€” repeat 2–3 times to get the residue out. Weigh a thick towel down with books for an hour, then let it air-dry and brush the pile up.

Why this one's tricky

Pet urine is two problems at once: the visible stain, and the smell that tells your pet 'this is the spot'. Ammonia-based cleaners make things worse because, to an animal, ammonia smells like urine. Blot until almost nothing comes up, then use a 1:1 white vinegar and water mix to neutralize it, and finish with baking soda vacuumed up once dry. Old or repeat spots that have soaked into the underlay may need an enzyme cleaner or a professional extraction.

Phase 2: Deep restoration

If a faint shadow remains after the initial rinse, or for fabrics that cannot tolerate water agitation:

Residual ghost-ring or dry-clean-only fiber?

Normal washing often won't shift the last trace of a set-in stain. Treat it with a targeted spotter before it goes anywhere near dryer heat β€” heat locks in whatever is left.
