Phase 1: Immediate first aid

Use what you have right now. Nothing to buy.

  1. Blot & isolate

Blot from the outside in with a white cloth or kitchen roll β€” press, lift, move to a clean bit. Don't rub. Flush from the back with cold water if the fabric allows. On silk: press gently, never rub, and don't wring.

  2. Pantry pre-treatment

    You need

5 ml Wool wash (e.g. Woolite) or gentle shampoo+250 ml cold water

πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊWool wash (e.g. Softly, Woolmix) or gentle shampoo

    Method

Mix gently. Dab on with a white cloth, then press dry with a fresh one. Repeat little and often β€” on delicate fibres, patience beats pressure.

  3. Final flush & wash

Rinse by gently swishing in cold water. Roll in a towel to remove water β€” never wring β€” and dry flat out of direct sun. If a mark remains, take it to a dry cleaner and tell them exactly what it is.

Why this one's tricky

Silk is a protein fibre, much like hair, and its sheen comes from a smooth surface that rubbing destroys in seconds. That makes red wine on silk a 'less is more' job: press, never rub, never wring, and skip peroxide entirely. A drop of gentle shampoo in cold water is about as strong as you should go at home. If a shadow remains, take it to a dry cleaner quickly and tell them exactly what it was.

Phase 2: Deep restoration

If a faint shadow remains after the initial rinse, or for fabrics that cannot tolerate water agitation:

Residual ghost-ring or dry-clean-only fibre?

Normal washing often won't shift the last trace of a set-in stain. Treat it with a targeted spotter before it goes anywhere near tumble-dryer heat β€” heat locks in whatever is left.
