Phase 1: Immediate first aid

Use what you have right now. Nothing to buy.

  1. Blot & isolate

Blot up as much as you can with a cold, damp cloth. Flush from the back with cold running water so it's pushed out the way it came in.

  2. Pantry pre-treatment

    You need

    15 ml 3% hydrogen peroxide

3% hydrogen peroxide: The brown pharmacy bottle. Stronger hair-bleach peroxide will damage fabric.

    Method

Dab on undiluted β€” it will fizz as it breaks the blood down. Blot and repeat until the fizzing stops. White or colourfast fabrics only.

  3. Final flush & wash

Rinse the treatment out from the back with cold water. Wash on the care-label setting, then air-dry and check in daylight before any tumble-drying β€” heat sets whatever is left.

Why this one's tricky

Everything about blood comes down to temperature. Blood is protein, and warm water cooks it into the fibres the way heat sets an egg white. Cold water, salt, and (on whites) 3% hydrogen peroxide will lift fresh blood from cotton almost completely. Dried blood takes longer: soak in cold salty water for half an hour first to soften it. Keep it away from warm washes and the dryer until it has gone.

Phase 2: Deep restoration

If a faint shadow remains after the initial rinse, or for fabrics that cannot tolerate water agitation:

Residual ghost-ring or dry-clean-only fibre?

Normal washing often won't shift the last trace of a set-in stain. Treat it with a targeted spotter before it goes anywhere near tumble-dryer heat β€” heat locks in whatever is left.
