Phase 1: Immediate first aid
Use what you have right now. Nothing to buy.
Blot & isolate
Blot straight away with a dry white cloth to pull the liquid out. Then flush from the back with cool water. On carpet: work from the edges inward, and never pour liquid on.
Pantry pre-treatment

Method
Mix together. Sponge onto the stain from the outside in, leave 10 minutes, then blot dry with a fresh cloth. Never mix vinegar with peroxide or bleach.
Final flush & wash
Rinse by spraying a little lukewarm water and blotting dry — repeat 2–3 times to get the residue out. Weigh a thick towel down with books for an hour, then let it air-dry and brush the pile up.
Why this one's tricky
Coffee on carpet usually comes with milk, and that changes things: you're dealing with tannin (the brown) and milk protein and fat (which can go sour if left damp). Cool water, a white vinegar and washing-up liquid mix, and lots of blotting handles both. Avoid steam cleaners on a fresh coffee spill, because the heat sets the tannin. Dry the area thoroughly so the pad underneath doesn't stay damp and start to smell.
Phase 2: Deep restoration
If a faint shadow remains after the initial rinse, or for fabrics that cannot tolerate water agitation:
Residual ghost-ring or dry-clean-only fibre?
Normal washing often won't shift the last trace of a set-in stain. Treat it with a targeted spotter before it goes anywhere near tumble-dryer heat — heat locks in whatever is left.
